Lydia’s curtain

The curtain that separates Lydia’s space from the apartment’s living room is in constant use in One Day at a Time. Lydia has likely been dramatic since she was born, and the curtain is a great tool for that.

I love the drama that the curtain brings to Lydia’s constantly dramatic character. This season, the curtain almost became a character of its own. Between the three additional curtains she adds to avoid getting rid of some very old fabric, the curtain falling down at the most inopportune time, Penelope hiding her boyfriend behind it, and the American Flag curtain that Lydia creates after she gets her citizenship approved, the curtain gets a lot of use during season 2 of this fabulous family comedy.

We see why there’s a curtain there instead of a door in a flashback, which gives the viewers some insight into what the past looked like for Penelope, Victor, Lydia and the late Berto. It gives us a little bit of a view into how they all got to where they are, as well as setting a time period for our frame of reference.

It also leaves us with a quote that is honestly hilarious: “A curtain is just a wall with no self respect.”

The curtain also changes the set enough to keep the apartment visually interesting despite being the main set for the entire show. Without it, I think that the show would honestly be lacking, if only in moments like these:
