Alex’s self-confidence
Alex, whose full name is Alejandro “Alex” Alberto Alvarez Riera Calderon Leytevidal Inclan, is absolutely fantastic. He is one of my favorite parts of One Day At A Time. He is just so very himself all the time, much like his grandmother. Alex has Lydia’s confidence, but he also has Penelope’s selflessness … when it doesn’t conflict with his very important branding.
It’s also a way that we as viewers get to see Alex growing up. Even when he gets dumped at the dance, he still finds a way to make that a positive, with help from Penelope’s boyfriend, Max. Lydia has pumped his head so full of himself, that even that doesn’t really bother him.
We still get to see that he loves shoes, and making his appearance really pop, but he also acknowledges that he does need to do some work for the things he wants in life … with some encouragement from Penelope and Dr. Berkowitz.
Alex’s confidence is both loud and quiet at the same time. He brags about how great he is with women, but when it comes down to his self worth, he doesn’t let anything get in his way. Even racist jerks don’t get him down for long, with help from some delicious ice cream.
Alex makes a great foil to Elena, who is much more awkard and passionate than her popular yet calculating younger brother. And together, they make a fantastic team, which we lucky viewers get to see. They fight, they tease, they hug, and everything’s great.
I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Alex in the next season and beyond, because I think there’s great things ahead for his character. Plus, Marcel Ruiz is absolutely freaking adorable, and I can’t wait to see him grow as an actor.
