Gary Oldman was nominated for an Oscar and is he going to win?

Gary Oldman received his second Oscar nomination today. Will he finally take home the golden man?

For the second time, Gary Oldman has received a nomination for his work. The first being his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and now he’s being recognized by the Academy for his role as Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour.

Gary has had a pretty consistent career. His work was always stellar and it is honestly a shock that he’s only been nominated twice. So is he going to win this year? I think he has a pretty good chance. The last few award shows, Gary has been the one to take home the statue.

The movie itself is pretty good, a historical piece that didn’t have me checking my watch repeatedly to see when it would be finished. Following the darkest time for Winston Churchill during World War II, the movie shows Oldman as the Prime Minister and he is almost unrecognizable.

The thing about the Academy Awards is that, consistently, people win for the wrong performances. They are always winning for movies that are just ‘okay’ because they were robbed of a win on a year they actually deserved it.

Case in point? Jennifer Lawrence for Winter’s Bone, the role she should have won for. Instead, she won for Silver Lining’s Playbook, which is a fine movie but not her best. With Gary, this is kind of the case. Yes, he’s incredible as Winston but his best work was in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

They should have given him the Oscar that year but if they give it to him this year, it isn’t for a bad performance. He’s great in The Darkest Hour and if you haven’t seen it yet, you definitely should before the Oscars this March.
