SAG Awards: Will they impact the Oscar nominations?

With the SAG Awards finished, it is time for Oscar predictions to come rolling in before tomorrow’s announcement. So who do we think is going to take home the nominations?

Every year, we plan and try and figure out exactly who is going to take home the most Oscar nominations. And now, after this year’s SAG Awards, I think it is pretty clear who the front runners are going to be. First up, who is going to be nominated for Best Picture?

I think that it is definite that Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri is going to be nominated (since it has in every show) and that The Shape of Water and Call Me By Your Name are also going to be included. From there, it is anyone’s game. Personally, I think that I, Tonya and Lady Bird have the best chances of being included, but the Academy would be remiss if they didn’t nominate Get Out.

For Best Actor/Best Actress, there hasn’t really been any discrepancy or upset. Every awards show has featured the same actors (give or take a few from the Golden Globes to the SAG Awards),  and I think we aren’t really going to see a surprise win here. It would be nice for Timothée Chalamet to take home the Best Actor for Call Me By Your Name, and for Margot Robbie to come out with a win thanks to I, Tonya, but I think those awards are going to go to Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour and Frances McDormand for Three Billboards.

For Best Director, I think the surprise nominations are going to be Dee Rees for Mudbound, Jordan Peele for Get Out and Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird. The Academy’s going to fix what the Golden Globes messed up and nominate them. Do I think they’ll win? No, it’s likely Guillermo del Toro’s category to lose, but an upset is at least possible.

Supporting is pretty set in stone too. I think that it is a Sam Rockwell/Allison Janney ticket with maybe an upset for the ladies with Laurie Metcalf in Lady Bird taking home the win. Other than that, I think we know what we’re going to get.

So is this season going to be as unpredictable as we originally thought? No, everything is pretty much decided at this point. But who knows? Someone might just surprise us yet.
