Saturday Night Live recap and review: Jessica Chastain with musical guest Troye Sivan
This week on Saturday Night Live, we have Jessica Chastain as host with musical guest Troye Sivan and it was quite the show!
Saturday Night Live had Jessica Chastain hosting this week and boy was it a crazy ride. Overall, the episode was pretty good. There were some questionable sketches and some weird choices but funny enough.
This episode had quite a few sketches that are definitely going to be talked about tomorrow. From a sketch about the bachelor called Car Hunk to a weird director, we’re taking a look at everything that Jessica Chastain’s episode had to offer us.
Cold Open
The president is in peak physical condition. The best part of this entire opening? That Pete Davidson is asking the White House questions about the president’s health as Pete Davidson from Saturday Night Live.
Like most of the cold opens, it was just a simple silly little sketch to start the show off. There wasn’t really anything more to it than everyone asking the doctor some basic questions and him making weird jokes about it, but other than that, it was just a solid cold open.
Monologue
Did you know that Jessica Chastain sings? No? Well don’t worry, she kills her monologue! Talking about how she wanted to be at the Women’s March, Jessica, Cecily and Kate all sing “You Don’t Own Me” while everyone talks about the confusion in trying to maintain the ‘feminine’ ideal while being a feminist.
It is pretty good and there are some great bits in it but overall, it wasn’t the most memorable one.
Car Hunk
When a The Bachelor-like show comes on the air, this car hunk must find love. The best part? They just have Arie, the Car Hunk, switching out between Alex Moffat and another cast member throughout the sketch.
The joke is that all the girls were trying to be quirky. If you weren’t paying attention, you may have missed the two men switching places, but it was pretty incredible.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Will gets taken into fake witness protection and has his teeth taken out and is almost murdered but ends up being a recluse in the woods. Sounds crazy right? Well, that’s this entire sketch but it is glorious.
Based on the theme song, it just continues the story of Will going to Bel-Air and takes some pretty crazy twists and turns along the way.
Google Talk
Maybe don’t dress and look like Bart Simpson if your name is Burt Samson. That’s part of this kid’s problem. In a talk about bullying, these people at Google want to talk about how we should actively try and help those being bullied.
The problem is that Burt is made fun of for looking like Bart Simpson, and everyone just continues to make jokes about him being a part of the Simpson family. Honestly? It’s maybe one of the funniest sketches this show has done.
What Even Matters Anymore
What does even matter anymore? When Jessica Chastain pretends to host a game show, she continues to show her friends (who are pretending to be contestants) that nothing matters anymore. It is a sad way to think about stuff, but it also isn’t that far off from how a lot of us are feeling.
It was a very meta joke that really hit and was probably one of the best sketches of the entire night. Especially when Jessica just needed a hug.
Troye Sivan
Sure. I mean look, if you like Troye Sivan and his music, this was a good performance. But I was very confused by the song and what he was doing while he was performing and I still can’t figure out if his hair was wet or dirty. Either way, I am not the biggest fan. At least with that first song.
The second song? It is a completely different performance. It is an acoustic number that has Troye just singing and it is really pretty. So maybe he had two very different performances, but this ended up working out and being a great performance.
Weekend Update
I mean honestly, Weekend Update is Weekend Update. You kind of know what to expect. This week though everyone realized that they’re attracted to Mikey Day as Prince Harry. There were some really good jokes and some that fell flat but overall, it was fun.
Kate McKinnon was Mueller and Cecily was the infamous Stormy Daniels. So overall, it was a pretty good Weekend Update this week.
Amazon’s New Headquarters
Each city brings people to Amazon to try and get them to open Amazon locations in their city. But they seemed to bring only celebrities that maybe you shouldn’t want to present your city. With Paul Dean and Casey Affleck, it wasn’t the best group of people to have represent a city.
In the end, the owner of Amazon got to have Pitbull be his friend to represent Miami, and we never really know what city he ends up choosing!
Taco Math
At first, this sketch seemed like two girls who were stupid and a man explaining something simple to them, which wasn’t great. But then, as the sketch went on, Aidy Bryant appears to tell these girls that she’ll just pay for their food because she couldn’t handle them not understanding and it felt a little better.
Did this sketch need to be in the show? Not really, but sometimes there are sketches that just don’t make sense that make it to air. I just wish that maybe the waiter was a woman rather than Mikey Day explaining it to them.
Doctor’s Orders
Chad is back and this time, he’s making his doctor fall in love with him. When he’s in the hospital because he tries to eat dog poop, Chad makes Jessica Chastain want nothing more than to fall in love with him.
Honestly, these Chad sketches make no sense. But that’s the point. He just says “okay” a lot and whoever is in love with him loves whatever dumb thing he did to get himself in that situation. It is weird, fun, and it works.
Film Set
When Kenan Thompson thinks he’s supposed to be directing a commercial, he gives Leslie Jones and Jessica Chastain some crazy directions. But then again, it was the eleventh hour sketch and probably one of the dumbest yet funniest ones on the show.
These are always so silly and just let the players have fun and that’s exactly what it did.
Overall, it was a pretty solid episode. Jessica did an incredible job hosting and hopefully that means she’ll come back and do it again soon!
