Saturday Night Live recap and review: Sam Rockwell with musical guest Halsey
Last night, we had a F-bomb on Saturday Night Live and really, that’s what everyone is talking about. Here’s our recap of Sam Rockwell’s hosting gig.
Saturday Night Live returned with quite the episode. Getting ready for a potential Oscar win, Sam Rockwell took on hosting. And with musical guest Halsey, it promised to be a pretty great show. And we were in luck because it was funny, smart, and there was an accidental F-bomb dropped in the first Rockwell sketch.
So overall, it was an okay episode.
But there were some amazing moments that we’re going to be talking about for quite a while.
Cold Open
Every time there is one of these Morning Joe sketches they get more and more uncomfortable and it is incredible. But why was this one special? Because we finally saw who Steve Bannon is and it is none other than Bill Murray!
With special guests Fred Armisen and Bill Murray, the cold open already promised us a great show and was surprising long for a cold open.
Monologue
Sam Rockwell isn’t going to be your bit side character anymore. Now, he’s a leading man. Or at least that’s what he thinks he should be since he won a Golden Globe. Honestly? It was a little awkward. I liked it, but I think that Sam Rockwell himself might be a little out there which is why we love him so much.
Science Show
Here it is folks, the accidental F-bomb. In Sam’s first sketch of the night, he played a frustrated science host who was dealing with two very dumb students. And when his frustration got too real, Sam broke and said the F-word, catching himself after he’d already said it.
You’d think at this point that Saturday Night Live might get the buzzer guy from the Golden Globes to come work for them so they don’t have to worry about it.
Tucci Gang
Do you love Stanley Tucci and wish he was in every movie? Well, so does Sam Rockwell and Lil Pump. Basically, it is just a song praising Tucci over and over again. Because really, who doesn’t love him?
This sketch weirdly spoke to me. Maybe because I love Stanley Tucci but still, it was incredible.
Fashion Panel
In 2018, you can’t really have a show based on fashion. Or at least that’s what The Look realized. When a show meant to review the fashion from the Golden Globes feels uncomfortable, everyone just tries to use empowering words for all the dresses.
Someone calls Kate Hudson “beautiful” and it goes into a whole debate on the matter and it is just a fun sketch pointing out how we, as a society, have maybe moved past shows like this.
My Drunk Boyfriend
Do you want a boyfriend who gets drunk when you’re out and you have to take care of him? Well, no worries! You can just buy one. Really, this sketch is pretty funny and even the tagline at the end for Drunk Girlfriend was pretty good as well.
Halsey
Okay so if you didn’t love G-Easy and Halsey before, get ready. Maybe I want to fall in love exclusively because of this performance? Who knows, but it was incredible. Halsey always puts on a good show, but both of her numbers from the episode were fun songs that make you want to dance and also hold your boyfriend’s thigh on national television.
I don’t really know why, but they’re just both great songs to listen to. Which really isn’t that surprising because Halsey’s pretty great.
Weekend Update
Weekend Update took no prisoners this week. They continually tore down Trump and when NBC told them to do some censoring instead of saying the actual word, they ignored it and said it anyway. (Yes, it’s exactly what you think it is.)
Captain Hook
Ever stop and think about how weird Peter Pan really is? Just an old dude fighting with a bunch of little boys. So Saturday Night Live decided to bring that topic of conversation to light. Which, fine, but also you ruined Peter Pan for all of us.
In their defense though, Hook is already a bad dude so it isn’t really doing anything to make us like him. In fact, we just hate him more now.
ATM
Don’t judge a book by its cover unless it is going to rob you. At a late night ATM, a man judges a black man and is afraid he’s going to rob him. They share a moment when they realize that we shouldn’t judge what other people look like.
And then when he leaves, the other man gets robbed. There’s also a prostitute storyline? I don’t know, this one is a little stranger, and I’m not sure why it exists, but it is shot like a short movie so that’s cool.
Marcus Comes to Dinner
Alex Moffat’s dad realizes he wants a divorce when he comes home with his boyfriend. How? Well, Alex’s boyfriend is a gay porn star and Sam Rockwell admits that that is how he recognizes him and then leaves the house to live his true life, straight-up.
Another one that is weird but also pretty funny.
Genetics Lab
Honestly a dream world. When a man wants his dog’s head on his dead brother’s body, he gets it done. In a weird genetics lab, this man creates a dog-man who talks and eats a sandwich and I think it might have been an excuse to have a dog on stage. Which, okay, fine, that’s a perfect excuse.
It is maybe one of the dumbest sketches ever but also the greatest? Because we got to look at a dog? I don’t know but it is great.
Chantix
Sometimes, you just need to let people know that you’re an actress. When Kelly quits smoking, she starts to talk about how she is an actress. The voiceover doesn’t care but Kelly wants everyone to know. In the last minute sketch, it was honestly pretty great.
Overall, it was a fine episode. Nothing special but also it had an F-bomb so that’s pretty great.
