First Teen Titans Go! to the Movies trailer is juvenile, but it works

While many Teen Titans continue to mourn over the loss of the first animated series, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is a breath of fresh air.

A lot of animation relies on low-brow comedy because it’s an easy and reliable sell. To differentiate between the good and the great, animation also can become self-aware in a space that doesn’t necessarily have to bend to any normal constructs or rules. Animation, as I see it, is a free for all.

But when you slap a popular skin or brand on something, suddenly you will find that the most obtuse gatekeeper is the fandom itself. For the Teen Titans Go! series, it faced an uphill battle by existing as a follow-up to the original Teen Titans animated series that pretty much everybody loved and felt was axed too soon.

Each character in the original Teen Titans series was incredibly true to form, but the Teen Titans Go! cast (same roster of heroes) skews a lot younger and doesn’t enjoy the same loyal fanbase. But it does have something! Somebody likes it, because it’s getting its own movie: Teen Titans Go! to the Movies.

I mean, the title says it all.

It says that they know what they’re about and they’re just going to keep doing it. But thanks to Teen Titans Go! to the Movies‘ first trailer, it’s also apparent that they know what the rest of DC is about, too.

In addition to jumping right into it with the popularity of Wonder Woman, Teen Titans Go! doesn’t blink twice at the opportunity for a fart joke. It’s colorful, silly and knows it deserves a shot at the big screen (especially in a world where Aquaman can have his).

The Teen Titans are such a beloved group, people still haven’t let go of the original animated series, and Warner Bros. is trying their hand with a live-action show, too. Luckily, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is just a breath of fresh air for anyone who just wants to let the discourse go and enjoy a fun movie.

Teen Titans Go! to the Movies hits theaters on July 27, 2018.
