Is a sixth season of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD a possibility?

In interviews, ABC Entertainment chief Channing Dungey made comments about the future of Agents of SHIELD. So were they good or bad?

When it comes to the future of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, fans always wonder what comes next.

Somehow we have made it to five seasons (and one online miniseries!). The keyword is “somehow,” because it’s almost unbelievable that Agents of SHIELD has made it this far.

It should come as little surprise that ABC Entertainment chief Channing Dungey made comments about the show’s future.

Honestly, it’s not much to go on. Here’s an excerpt from the Hollywood Reporter:

"Post-panel, Dungey spoke to a smaller group about the future of Marvel on ABC, revealing that the network would be meeting with the comic book powerhouse about another potential season of Agents of SHIELD."

It literally says nothing except that they’re meeting soon to discuss the show’s future. With the rumors before about Disney pulling strings not to cancel it after the last season, it wouldn’t come as much of a shock if this is the show’s final season.

But should it be? Sure, ABC pushed it to the death-sentence slot on Friday nights. But it premiered to steady numbers (2.5 million), and while its numbers have slipped in subsequent Fridays, its delayed viewing numbers keep it relatively steady in viewership. Heck, I usually have plans Friday night and end up watching it Saturday morning.

Agents of SHIELD also just reached its 100th episode, which means rebroadcasts on other channels. It’s been a staple on ABC for the last five years; can you really see them throwing that away? Even in light of the Fox merger with Disney?

Next: Is there room for Thor in the post-Avengers 4 world?

In the end, it all come down to Abed’s utterance of “six seasons and a movie.” Granted, this is part of the MCU, so we have seventeen movies… still.

Six seasons of a show that many people bailed on halfway through the first season seems pretty darn good.
