11 things the Harry Potter movies actually did right
The Triwizard Tournament
As the films go, Goblet of Fire is among the more accurate ones. The Triwizard Tournament was taken straight from the books, even if Dumbledore could have been a bit calmer about the whole four champions business.
In particular, the three tasks Harry must complete are identical to the tasks in the fourth book. The Hungarian Horntail was as menacing as described by Rowling, and Harry’s clever way of escaping it was left the same. Hagrid even still tips him off ahead of time, though this is Ron’s idea in the films, not imposter Moody’s.
The merpeople also match the not-so-cuddly description set forth in the books, and Harry’s noble attempt to save the rest of the champions’ hostages went untouched. The hysterically awkward egg clue, Moaning Myrtle’s help included, remains in the film. The only thing that was changed was Harry’s means of beating the task: Neville gives him the gillyweed in the movie, not Dobby.
And finally, the maze scene, while a bit rushed in the film, bears a number of similarities to its book scene. Krum still falls victim to the Imperio curse, attacking the other champions to clear Harry’s way to the center. And the life-altering moment when Harry and Cedric decide to split first place in the tournament remains as distressing as ever (at least, if you know what’s coming).
