Project Runway

The premise: A handful of clothes designers have to make clothes in increasingly absurd and impossible scenarios. Hosted by Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, the show does wonders for the creativity of up and coming designers, but it’s hell on their mental health. Always reaching to provide the most outrageous and difficult assignments for designers, these poor people tiptoe right up to the brink of a breakdown, and teeter there for most of the season.

Why it’s so good: The competition is intense without being nerve-wracking. The competition gets pretty serious as time constraints and skill level work to weed out the players. The designers have to stretch their capabilities in each challenge and there is something so thrilling and satisfying about seeing their vision come to fruition.

One of the most infamous assignments of the show, the unconventional challenge, presents designers with an unusual set of materials that they must turn in to high fashion. It’s the most fun because, frankly, it’s the most frustrating for the designers. But it also yields the most amazing results. Watching a pile of garbage, salvaged from the local landfill, transform into an evening gown is a lot of fun.

How to watch: You can watch seasons 9 through 14 on Hulu.
