These five songs made you sob like the remains of your alien father-figure were just launched into space and dance like Iron Man tricked out your suit.

Like an amp that goes up to 11, the soundtracks of superhero movies like Wonder Woman or Spider-Man: Homecoming have the seemingly impossible task of putting a song to a sensory overload of scenes. To make matters more difficult, those songs have to make millions of diverse movie-goers across the globe empathize with characters who are defined by their extraordinariness.

In 2017, five songs and scenes from the Marvel and DC universes did the job better than all the rest. With the help of some of the biggest names in pop, punk, and classic rock, these soundtracks helped us feel a little more superhuman — although not always in ways we would like.

Guardians of the Galaxy emotionally compromised us. Justice League tag-teamed with a Norwegian singer to depress us for all the right reasons. Peter Parker reminded us that he’s only a superhero when he’s not grounded. Thor outed himself as Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. And Diana Prince may have done all of the above.

If you ever wanted a song to make you cry like the remains of your alien father-figure were just launched into space or hit the treadmill like the Goddess of Death was after you, you’ve come to the right place.
