Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

There have been a lot of Resident Evil games since the original iteration on the PlayStation in 1996. Time hasn’t slowed this series in the least.

Resident Evil went back to its roots for this outing, the 11th main entry, delivering a quality game that entertained and terrified for hours. The game was scary and at times, downright terrifying; running through the first floor of a very enclosed house while avoiding a man trying to kill you with a shovel makes for a stressful situation. Especially when he blindsides you from nowhere.

And yet, you want to fight through that terror and keep playing. Every moment is tense and there were minimal “cheap scares” (though some will definitely feel like that because you’re so alert; they feel like a low blow).

The game itself is relatively short. On normal mode, it takes about seven to nine hours to complete. And while it’s not as breathtakingly beautiful as the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Horizon Zero Dawn, the layout and feel of the southern plantation helped its overall atmosphere.

If you’re looking to have a “scary game night” with friends or want to freak yourself out while you’re home alone over break, put this one on your short list.
