Binge-worthy specials: A list of TV marathons happening on Christmas Day
The top television networks will be airing holiday marathons through Christmas Day, with something for fans of every genre.
If you’re looking for movies to snuggle up and watch on Christmas Day, you won’t need to search very far. In typical holiday fashion, television networks will air marathons of your favorite features throughout the 25th.
Entertainment Weekly and Elite Daily have comprehensive lists of all the networks that have marathons planned, but I’ll go through the most notable ones here. Luckily, there seems to be a marathon for every type of viewer.
Month-long marathons
Every year, television networks permeate their schedules with classic holiday films. It’s tradition. Freeform runs Christmas films throughout the month of December with its 25 Days of Christmas, as does Hallmark with its Countdown to Christmas. Both of these will wrap up with non-stop holiday movies on Christmas Day.
Catching the classics
If classic Christmas movies are up your alley, TBS and TNT are both taking it back to the ’80s with all day marathons of A Christmas Story. Encore will also air all three Home Alone movies back to back for most of the 25th.
Fandom favorites
All the Whovians out there will be happy to hear that BBC is running its usual Doctor Who marathon straight through Christmas Day. The re-runs will lead right up to the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special, made more exciting by the introduction of the first female Doctor (played by Jodie Whittaker).
Comedy Central will also be repeating its South Park Christmas specials over the course of the day. Mr. Hanky, the Christmas poo, will make several appearances, along with some well-known woodland creatures.
A criminal Christmas
Fans of murder mysteries can tune into Oxygen’s Homicide for the Holidays marathon, spanning Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Additionally, WE tv will begin their Criminal Minds marathon at 4 p.m. and continue re-runs of the third season throughout the night.
