A shipper’s guide to Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Damerey (Poe Dameron/Rey)
There is yet another option for Rey, if boys are her thing. If your hopes for FinnRey were dashed, there was a significant meeting that happened seconds after the reunion, when Poe and Rey shook hands for the first time.
It’s been widely pointed out that Oscar Isaac could have chemistry with a lamp post, but when matched with Daisy Ridley, genuinely eye-twinkling sparks fly. We might have only witnessed their first meeting but we know they have plenty in common. They are both incredible pilots, they both hate Kylo Ren, both love Leia, both love Finn…
Inevitably, people are still attached to their OG pairings of FinnRey and StormPilot, and while we can’t blame them, it is important to address this last common denominator. To paraphrase an exchange from Alan Bennett’s The History Boys, there is a reason Rey and Poe’s eyes meet so twinklingly. Their eyes meet looking at Finn.
The word “OT3” echoes in the distance.
But really, until Episode IX comes out, the Damerey ship rests on a handshake, nothing more and nothing less.
All’s fair in love and war. With two more years to go until we get Episode IX, whatever you ship, it’s all to play for.
What will retroactively become the “I love you/I know” of the new trilogy? Poe’s lip bite? Rey and Kylo’s virtual hand-holding? Rose’s declaration of love that will adorn Star Wars t-shirts until the end of time?
Who can say? All we know is that our minds will continue to come up with ways our favorite characters can love each other.
