A shipper’s guide to Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Reyva (Rey/Jessika Pava)
Reyva shippers are used to having very little to work with, but The Last Jedi doesn’t even give them that. There is nothing to put Jessika Pava, Black Squadron queen, together with Rey, Jedi Master, as much as we’d love it to happen. In fact, Jess doesn’t even appear in The Last Jedi, whether due to Jessica Henwick’s (the actress who plays her) busy schedule or the enormous list of characters already included in the movie.
Whatever the reason, we’re definitely sad not to have her back. Not only was it great to have a named female pilot, to go alongside Wedge Antilles and Biggs Darklighter as background fan favorites, Reyva is also one of the few femslash ships in the Star Wars fandom.
It’s a very good one, based on mutual respect and mutual moral fiber, and it shows us that Rey doesn’t need a man. Her relationship with Finn doesn’t have to be anything more than it is. Rey can find love anywhere in the galaxy, especially with a tertiary lady pilot character who shares her values and her drive to fight injustice.
Wow. Has anybody told Rian Johnson about Reyva? We might have to write him a strongly worded letter.
