Lin-Manuel Miranda has turned Hamilton fans on their ears again, with the announcement that he will “Hamildrop” 13 new songs — starting at midnight on Friday, Dec. 15.
It’s the anniversary of the world-rocking Hamilton Mixtape, and it won’t go uncelebrated. Miranda, like his Alexander Hamilton, writes like he’s running out of time.
And even though he’s no longer in the musical and has other projects, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have material.
Here’s his original announcement:
Ben Franklin didn’t make it onto the stage in Hamilton: A Musical, but he will be the first one featured in the #hamildrops.
The first song to be “hamildropped” will be Ben Franklin’s song by The Decemberists, in both a clean and explicit version, with a coy “you’ll see why” by Miranda.
After that, one song a month will be dropped every month.
“‘member how I said I once wrote some Decemberists-esque lyrics for a Ben Franklin tune, but never set ‘em to music?,” Miranda tweeted. “So I sent the lyrics to @ColinMeloy. He’s in @TheDecemberists. And HE set it to music as only he and his crew can. It absolutely blew me away. I went BACK to write new lyrics for a bridge for him. He took it to @TheDecemberists & they brought Ben Franklin to life.”
If you missed out on the phenomenon that is Hamilton, it won 11 Tony awards in 2016, including the awards for Best Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actress and Actor, and Best Direction of a Musical. Miranda got the idea from reading Ron Chernow’s biography Alexander Hamilton while on vacation after a successful run of his first hit musical, In the Heights.
