Despite not having many opportunities to shine in previews for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, everything we see of Rose Tico makes us love her.
If the goal of creating Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi was to make someone who really doesn’t seem like she should be a main character in Star Wars … be a main character in Star Wars … then mission accomplished. Yes, that’s even taking into account that the First Order has apparently dealt her a blow already, which is a pretty solid path to becoming an important character, even if she’s probably not the only one to join the Resistance as a result, as we’ve speculated.
And yes, you can argue that they kind of did this with Finn already, taking a former stormtrooper and turning him into a main character, but even that’s still not an entirely unexpected thing. Whatever. Just let us love Rose, okay? Whether it’s her not being able to handle being around Finn or otherwise having a perfectly normal reaction to facing down the First Order, we get it. We really do, Rose.
If the entire film manages to give her a character arc, it’ll be another step forward for Star Wars in its use of female characters. Rey, Captain Phasma and, of course, General Leia are still here and still have major roles — there’s no way to deny that — but it’s possible for other women in the galaxy to have plot importance, too. Judging by the teasers, Rose will also be someone different.
Honestly, we’re just excited to finally get to know Rose (and don’t think we’ve forgotten about Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, either). Here’s hoping that these characters leave fans with a good impression … and lead to a little more gender equality in the galaxy.
