I, Tonya: Sebastian Stan’s costumes make it all worth it
I, Tonya is incredible, especially with Sebastian Stan’s costumes. Who doesn’t love a guy in a turtleneck and high-waisted jeans?
Maybe it makes me weird and maybe I’m okay with that but I’m only attracted to Sebastian Stan when he’s playing gross men in weird sports movies. That means that I saw I, Tonya for a lot of reasons but mainly for Sebastian Stan’s wardrobe.
The movie is the recollection of the ‘incident’ based on interviews from Jeff Gillooly, Tonya Harding, and those involved in the knee breaking of Nancy Kerrigan. In a Goodfellas-esque take on the filmmaking process, the movie shows both conflicting sides of the story. Who hit whom, who was abusive to whom, who knew what, it’s all over the place in the best possible way.
While Jeff Gillooly is a terrible character (at least in Tonya’s point of view), the looks that Sebastian Stan has are maybe the best looks he’s ever rocked before. And that’s hard to say since he’s wearing high-waisted jeans and turtlenecks the entire movie.
’90s fashion isn’t for everyone but if it came back just for SebStan to wear, I don’t think anyone would complain about it. Honestly though, this movie does a great job of showing what truly happened (well, kind of) between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding.
The film is up for the viewer’s interpretation. You can either believe Jeff, Tonya, Shawn or none of them at all. In the end, Tonya got the worst of it and, if what happens in the movie is actual fact, it isn’t exactly fair. (Tonya Harding was banned from skating professionally for life when Jeff and Shawn got minimal sentences and fined but can still do whatever they want.)

So if you’re wondering if you should see I, Tonya this weekend, the answer is yes. It is incredible, there are so many great performances, and the costumes are giving us all our 90s dreams come true. Also Sebastian Stan, though.
