Star Wars: The Last Jedi released a new teaser that shows Rey in a precarious position and taking hold of a brand new weapon.
As everyone prepares for the thrilling next chapter of Star Wars, I’ve been trying to open my mind to any and all possibilities. I’ve taken issue with the thought of a Kylo Ren redemption in The Last Jedi, and I’m already softening to that. But I still maintain that Rey won’t go dark. I think it’s a wonderful tease, but it doesn’t fit with the story, in my opinion.
While I try to decipher what’s next for her on her journey, I’ve noticed that Daisy Ridley (the only interviews I’ll watch, obviously) has described the character as “stubborn.” And I mean, repeatedly.
So when The Last Jedi dropped its “In VIII days” teaser, the bit at the end wasn’t that surprising to me. Check it out below:
As you can see, Rey grabs Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. Of course, people may think that this is the first indication that she’s perfectly willing to carry the red saber as many Dark Side agents do. But once you give your brain a second to calm down, she’s obviously grabbing it as her only defense in the room. Plus, we know this is the scene where she meets with Snoke and is subsequently tortured. So she looks pretty reasonably angry and willing to fight off whoever attacks her next. She’s not going down without a fight, which is another way of saying “stubborn.”

Perhaps something more interesting to chew on would be why Kylo Ren let it go in the first place. Did he put it down? It’s one thing to have her pull something past him, like she did in The Force Awakens, but to pull it directly out of his hands? Come on.
