Episode 5: Samuel Grant Murders Elizabeth Carruthers

After Elizabeth suddenly warms up to her second husband, we really should have known this was all coming. Alas, although she gets Cobbs Pond arrested for murder, Pond’s employer/lover, Samuel Grant, turns out to also be capable of murder!

This scene wins the episode as the most ridiculous because of how it all plays out — it goes way too long in the first place. That’s before we get to the last part, where (mercifully not shown, but definitely heard with some very nasty sounds that can only be described as squelching) he continues hitting her over and over with a statue while repeating “I’m a good man.”

Newsflash: murder, even of someone who definitely provoked you (and Elizabeth is … was … extremely good at that sort of thing, as Josephette points out in episode 6), generally does not make you a good person. But that’s just me. What makes this entire development even more ridiculous is when, later in the same episode, Clenna finds him, still in the room with Elizabeth’s corpse, and does not freak out, but instead offers to assist him in hiding the body! No screaming, no asking what happened, just talking about where to dump the body.

Honorable mention: McTaggart literally stabs himself and then proceeds to say “That tickles!” It’s hilarious, completely in character and would have won this episode if not for the aforementioned ridiculously long murder scene.
