Episode 4: Mary and the New Girl

With Grace off to Montréal as part of the ongoing war of power plays between her and her husband, he hands control over to Carter, as noted in the above clip, and Carter basically turns it into a brothel, bringing along new girls like Victoria. Although Sokanon is not pleased to see a native girl being put into this line of work, a soldier heads upstairs with Victoria… even though she says no and tries to fight back.

Enter Mary, who is not about to let this soldier hurt the new girl. She stabs the soldier in the neck, which somehow doesn’t kill him (which is in and of itself ridiculous), but he’s instead alive enough to actually start choking Mary, pushing her up against the wall. However, Mary does not own just one knife.

She happens to own two, and she stabs the soldier right through the top of his balding head! It’s the kind of moment that might have a bored viewer sitting straight up in their seats, but one starts wondering how exactly she got a knife through the top of the soldier’s skull.

So, in a sense, this moment is both ridiculous and ridiculously awesome … especially when Mary, Victoria and Sokanon all work on getting rid of the body together. If Frontier emphasizes anything, it’s the strength of teamwork.

(And violence. And swearing.)

Honorable mention: Lord Benton tells the sailors they work for him, and doesn’t immediately get murdered for it.
