12. Rey isn’t the last Jedi — or is she?
There has been a huge amount of disturbance in the Force since the announcement of Episode VIII’s title back in January. First of all, did that mean Luke was going to die? Is he the last Jedi or is that Rey?
Is Jedi plural or singular? International translations of the title seemed to clear that up, suggesting it was plural, meaning that perhaps it’s the last order of Jedi, which fits with Luke Skywalker’s assertion that it’s time for it to end. Or maybe it’s about time, as opposed to finality. Perhaps Kylo was the last Jedi Luke trained and The Last Jedi refers to him?
I digress. We do know however that the last Jedi of the title is initially Luke, at least at the start of the movie. Johnson told the New York Times that it was always the intent for Luke to be the last Jedi but by the end of the film, it may be more open to interpretation.
“There’s always wiggle room in these movies — everything is from a certain point of view — but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi,” Johnson told David Itzkoff. “And he’s removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown.”
It is these reasons we should turn our attention to. We know that Luke has chosen Ahch-To precisely because it is “the most unfindable place in the galaxy” but why?
We know from the trailers he’s afraid of the raw power Kylo (and now Rey) possesses, but is it guilt too? As Slashfilm notes, the game Star Wars Battlefront II suggests that Luke went in search of the ancient Jedi Temple — perhaps what he discovered there wasn’t all sweetness and light?
