The Last Jedi: 15 things we know about the new Star Wars movie
2. The movie is going to be funnier than you expect
So with Snoke’s presence still felt in the galaxy far, far away and talk of gray Jedi on the horizon, it’d be fair to think that this Star Wars movie might be darker than the last. The trailer shows Kylo Ren potentially aiming to blow up a ship with his mother on it (though we think this is probably just clever editing).
The stakes seem high with all the characters and forgive me for saying that Poe, at the very least, sounds drained even when proclaiming that they will burn the First Order down. This is all without the fact that this will be General Leia’s final appearance in the series and we’re not entirely sure how it’s going to go down. We’re scared.
Luckily, Johnson has promised that it won’t be all doom and gloom (I mean, how could it be when there are Porgs?).
“That’s one thing I hope people will be surprised about with the movie,” Johnson said in an interview with Rolling Stone. “I think it’s very funny. The trailers have been kind of dark – the movie has that, but I also made a real conscious effort for it to be a riot. I want it to have all the things tonally that I associate with Star Wars, which is not just the Wagner of it. It’s also the Flash Gordon.”
With Han, who provided much of the humor of the original series, gone, it is reassuring to know that the tone hasn’t darkened too much. This is a Star Wars story after all, and Star Wars isn’t Star Wars without the odd laugh.
