Recasting Johnny Depp wouldn’t be the first time for the series
Many are coming up with the excuse that they can’t recast Johnny Depp because of continuity issues. I’d like to point out that Harry Potter has never had a problem with it before.
Johnny Depp is the hot button topic as of recently. With the previous allegations and then David Yates defending of his ‘pure talent’, fans sure have a lot to say about his role as Grindelwald. Most want him recast (or to just go back to being Colin Farrell) but the outstanding argument is for the sake of continuity.
So I’d like to point out that the Harry Potter series has never had a problem recasting people before. When Richard Harris died, Sir Michael Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore and no one batted an eye.
They just recasted Lavender Brown and acted like we wouldn’t notice. Katie Bell and Alicia Spinnett were both replaced for whatever reason and Domnhall Gleeson was not always Bill Weasley.
These characters are beloved in the series and the movies simply had casting changes and just continued to tell the story like we, the audience, wouldn’t notice. And while we did notice, we didn’t put up a fuss because we’re smart enough to realize that sometimes things happen.
Sometimes you realize you need a bigger actor or the original can’t do it. And you recast and we move on. So the idea that you can’t possibly recast Johnny Depp for the sake of continuity with the audience is idiotic. We can understand that someone else is playing Grindelwald.
Next: There was a joke about Joss Whedon directing Cursed Child
And hey, maybe get someone who actually takes it seriously because if his performance at the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is any indication, Johnny Depp’s performance is going to continue to be a whole lot of extra that not that many people want to see in the first place.
