Animals and Harry Potter: Why Fang is great

facebooktwitterreddit

Fang is the dog that everyone likes to forget so we’re focusing on the best companion in the series! Even if he is afraid of literally everything.

Hagrid has a lot of pets but the best one is arguably Fang. The big dog with a heart of gold is pretty useless. He is afraid of everything, he slobbers everywhere, and he just kind of sits around. But that’s what makes him great! He’s not three-headed, he isn’t a dragon or a hippogriff. He’s just Fang.

So many of the things in this series are magical that sometimes we tend to appreciate the normalcy of something. Even Hedwig is a bit odd because we don’t really have owls as pets in the real world. He is just a regular dog who maybe is that great if you’re trapped in the woods and trying to get home safely.

Like Fang isn’t going to protect you. But he would probably cuddle you and keep you warm if you needed him to. And sometimes, that’s nice. One of the problems with the Harry Potter series is that there isn’t a lot of things that we’d see in our everyday lives.

At least when it comes to creatures. Sure Crookshanks is just a cat but even he’s used for magic. A rat turned into Peter Pettigrew and Sirius Black can turn himself into a dog. So the fact that Fang is just a dog, living his life in the magical world, too afraid of the Forbidden Forest to really go in it, is great.
