It is about time that we cancel Severus Snape

In the season of cancelling men, it is time we talk about Severus Snape and how we shouldn’t stan him. He’s not a good man.

Everyone seems to love Severus Snape despite the way he treated Harry Potter. So in the spirit of cancelling those terrible men out in the world, I propose that we cancel Snape once and for all. Look, I get it. Snape expressed his love for Lily Potter and suddenly everyone forgot how he verbally abused Harry Potter for years.

I guess it happens. But let’s take a look back at his relationship with Harry and his actions. He’s supposed to be protecting Harry, yes? So does his protection mean verbally abusing him while sometimes physically touching Harry in a rough way?

Because to me, that is the sign that maybe Snape isn’t that great of a person. I just think everyone clung to the storyline that he had loved Lily Potter for years and simply chose to forget that he’s actually terrible. I know how hard it can be. Loving a character that isn’t a great guy sucks. But that doesn’t mean we get to just excuse his actions.

He’s not ‘nuanced’ or a ‘flawed man’. He’s terrible. Severus Snape had used his words to hurt Harry Potter on more than one occasion and it is disgusting. Especially since this grown man did it to a child. And we are suddenly meant to forget it because he said he’d love Lily, a woman he verbally assaulted, always?

So in the spirit of stopping our love of gross men, I propose that we once, and for all, cancel Severus Snape. He does not deserve our affection, even if he did die protecting Hogwarts. His last actions do not excuse years of abuse because he was upset that Lily was dead.
