Abuse and Harry Potter: The long history in the series

With the comments made from David Yates, it is important to track the respite that the Harry Potter series brought to fans throughout the years. Especially those from abusive homes.

Harry Potter had a hard life. Not only did his parents die, but he was abused as a child by his aunt and uncle. Not necessarily physically but definitely verbally. So for many, this series helped them find a way to cope with their own abuse.

Victims of abuse turned to the Harry Potter series as a light. There are countless stories of people telling J.K Rowling that her story helped to save their life. Speaking of personal experience, when I was bullied in school, I’d turn to the pages of my favorite book and find the happiness I longed for in school.

So all this victim blaming talk isn’t exactly great for the series. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has its own story of abuse as well. Credence Barebone is abused by his mother in the first film, forced to surpress his magic until he because an obscurus.

It is a series littered with different kinds of abuse and how people cope with it and find their own way. So the issue isn’t necessarily Yates standing behind Depp but rather his choice of phrasing. By saying that one account shouldn’t mean anything isn’t great.

Not in the overall sense and definitely not in regards to this series. It isn’t changing anything, as we have stated before, but it does force us to look at this series and see what it means to those who are victims of both physical and verbal assault.

Next: How much drama can we take from Harry Potter? Honestly, too much

They work their entire lives to overcome it and many have found ways to through the Harry Potter series and we should not discount their stories to try and save face.
