“R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas”

Where in the galaxy did C-3PO round up a bunch of children to sing a song for R2-D2 as a gift? How do these children know who Artoo is? Why do they only “hope” that the message … well, okay, that one we can forgive, since it’s presumably a reference to “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.”

Everything else is questionable, but it’s cute, and I’ll let it slide. The power of nostalgia is particularly strong when it comes to Christmas in the Stars and Star Wars in general.

The random interlude where Threepio tells Artoo the message isn’t over is also kind of on point, since the song fades out and gets a bit wavery — as if the quaver converter (whatever that is, it sounds pretty technobabble to me) is actually failing.

If you don’t smile at the repeated “A merry Christmas!” in the chorus, though, I think you may have to re-examine your holiday spirit.

This song is also adorable for the reason that Artoo actually manages to sound a little touched or happy when the song repeats. For as much as the little astromech is mouthy (as much as he can be when he communicates in beeps and whistles), he does have a mechanical heart, and Threepio cares enough to get this put together for him.
