“The Odds Against Christmas”

Okay, this song … does not work. On multiple levels.

You see, the lyrics of the chorus to this song — which can and will stick in your head, especially the “bum, bum” that comes in after a few rounds of the chorus — go as follows:

"The odds against Christmas being Christmas Are 365 to one Christmas, you see, could have easily Never ever begun The odds against Christmas being Christmas […] Are so very large that all other odds Should seem terribly, terribly small"

The thing is, in this very song, C-3PO gives different odds of 92 million to three, which are far, far bigger odds than 365 to one, which kind of defeats the purpose. But the point that holidays like this one could have never happened, and the fact that we have them in general is nice, even if the holidays aren’t easy for everyone.

On a second point, 365/1 odds aren’t that big, actually. Even this writer, who is a confessed not-math person, knows that that’s not the case. For example, National Geographic gives the chances of being struck by lightning as 1 in 700,000. Once again, though, that’s kind of missing the point of the entire song, and it’s just a nice musical interlude before you get to perhaps the most legendary song on this entire CD.
