Tommy Shelby and The Rest of the Shelbys — Peaky Blinders

There is something to be said about the moxie it would take to betray your entire family. Whatever it is, Tommy Shelby has it. The entire premise of Peaky Blinders is the love of family, and Tommy has always been one to look out for his own. Except when it doesn’t suit him, and then he’s as ruthless as ever.

Coming up from a small time gangster to a big deal gangster, Tommy Shelby did whatever he had to do to succeed. Most days, he was gunning down enemies, cheating, lying and scheming. Most of the time he protected his loved ones,  but somewhere along the way, he started looking out for the business before anything else. His family bore the brunt of this change.

The people in his life always looked the other way, making excuses for his terrible behavior because it always seemed like he was (mostly) doing the right thing. However, when he turns on everyone, sacrificing those close to him, it becomes obvious that Tommy only cares about one thing: his fortune.

Although Tommy remains the protagonist of this story, he continues to make it harder and harder to root for him. He may be handsome, stoic, and incredibly fragile on the inside, but he’ makes it really hard to be on his side. That’s probably what his family thinks as they sit in jail, waiting to see what other terrible thing he’s going to do to them.
