Lemon Cakes — Game of Thrones

Sansa Stark has so little pleasure in her life, that if she wants to eat all the lemon cakes in the Seven Kingdoms, she should be allowed to do so. This poor girl has suffered tragedy and abuse untold, so if she receives a tiny amount of comfort for this delicate sweet, then she deserves it all.

We first happen upon Sansa’s preference when she meets with Lady Olenna and Margaery Tyrell. They offer her the treat, responding with “So we’ve heard” when she proclaims them her favorite. They make several more appearances throughout the series, and it’s possibly the  most famous Game of Thrones-related food.

Lemon cakes are a small, cake-like baked good that often features some sort of icing or frosting. The recipe corner of the Internet is chocked full of recipes for the goodies, and every famous chef from Martha to the Food Network has their own version of the tidbit.

Whether or not this is related to the HBO show or not is questionable, but they look super delicious for a medieval snack — much better than a turkey leg at least. Here’s Bon Appetit’s take on the lemon cake.
