Fish Fingers and Custard — Doctor Who

You don’t have to be British or a regenerated alien to enjoy salty and sweet. I routinely order fries with a chocolate Frosty. Dipping that salty stick into that cold treat is one of life’s greatest pleasures. The Eleventh Doctor has similar tastes, apparently. He’s mad for fish fingers (which Americans often call fish sticks) and custard (commonly known to Americans as pudding).

Shortly after regeneration, the Eleventh Doctor, played by the delightful Matt Smith, hits up the young Ameila Pond to feed him. He goes through all sorts of items first, deciding pretty quickly he doesn’t like them. There’s something about the creamy smoothness, coupled with the salty texture that makes the universe’s best snack. The craving for salty and sweet obviously knows no bounds, as it transcends time and space, much like the Doctor himself.

This combo became more than just a snack for the Doctor and Amy. It turned into a sentimental reminder of their early friendship, and a marker for special moments. Eleven even had fish custard as his last meal before he generated.

Matt Smith likes fish sticks and pudding as well, but confessed that he munched on something different on-set. While the character eats fish fingers, the actor eats coconut breaded cakes, which shatters the illusion of the whole moment, if you ask me. Doctor Who fans disagree, and they often take to YouTube to post their own videos of eating fish custard. The Geeky Chef has a handy recipe if you want to make your own.
