Gary Oldman in person is just as magical as you’d think. A Harry Potter fan never forgets their Sirius Black. No really, he’s perfect.
Seeing a hero of yours isn’t always great but seeing Gary Oldman was pretty awesome. I was going to a question and answer session for his movie The Darkest Hour and I figured I’d gotten over my obsession with Gary.
The thing is, once you love Sirius Black, you don’t really stop. The minute I read about Padfoot himself, I was enamored and wanted to know more. So that love translated to Gary Oldman when I saw him on screen in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and never went away.
So why did I think seeing him in person would be any different? I couldn’t have predicted my dumbfounded reaction but still. It was great because most of the people there were clearly fans of Leon the Professional or some of his older work (which I visited later in my life) but I was one of the very few who were clearly a Harry Potter kid.
It was fine though because I didn’t feel self-conscious or anything, especially when Gary walked on stage and all rational thought left me as my legs started shaking. Again, I figured I’d be cool about it. I’d met my all time favorite and been calm.
But there’s just something about being in a room with Gary Oldman that has you stuck, looking at him without wanting to take your eyes off him. And that’s exactly what happened. I clung onto every word he said and realized that this man is still one of the greats.

Is he going to win an Oscar this year for his work in The Darkest Hour? Probably, he’s incredible as Winston Churchill. But let me tell you, if you think you’re over your love of Gary Oldman. You’re not. You just have to see him in person and it all comes rushing back.
