Aquaman + “Icky Thump”

It was nice to see that Justice League was intent not to squander its casting of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman. The movie took basically every opportunity to remind us of how hot he is (which almost made up for the fact that the Amazon’s functional Wonder Woman battle armor had been replaced by leather bikinis).

Before donning his super suit, he swaggers into every scene looking like the lovechild of a hipster fashion model and a gruff sea captain you might enlist to kill the shark from Jaws.

But like all the best things in life, my favorite Aquaman scene involved gratuitous application of whiskey and The White Stripes. After a vaguely plot-relevant scene in which Arthur rescues a fisherman from a deadly storm, we immediately cut to Arthur slow-motion swaggering onto the pier in that iconic fur-lined coat, chugging whiskey from the bottle as hurricane-force waves crash over him.

I’m not sure that playing “Icky Thump” was even intended to be in the movie — plausibly, Momoa might have summoned it onto the soundtrack through sheer force of his eyebrows. It’s an utterly shameless exploitation of Jason Momoa’s ridiculous charisma, and I loved every millisecond of it.
