The latest Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser shows more of an already-familiar scene, and emphasizes that Luke Skywalker really is trying his best.
Perhaps the most interesting source of all alerted us to the latest Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser: Mark Hamill. Yes, Luke Skywalker himself actually retweeted a post containing the video, which, surprisingly enough, shows off a little more of Luke (as the original tweet from Star Wars Stuff notes in all caps).
But beyond just the fresh Luke, there also appears to be a brief shot of Poe staring at an explosion outside of his X-Wing that hasn’t been replayed over and over.
While the tagline of “Choose your path” is pretty clearly referring to Rey (and maybe even Kylo Ren), it’s clear that the lines chosen for Luke in this teaser are meant to show that he’s going to help influence Rey’s decision one way or another. “Resist, Rey!” he says, after first asking her what she sees. The latter is a line we’ve heard before. The former is not.
Without more context — we don’t even know if that’s from the same scene, although the teaser clearly wants us to think that it is — it’s not really possible to say what Rey’s supposed to resist, other than a generic answer of “the Dark Side” or “temptation to choose power”. (That’s probably the actual answer, frankly.)
It’s been clear from the beginning that Luke would probably end up training Rey to some extent, but this is the first time we’ve seen him really instructing her beyond those first words of “Breathe. Just breathe.”
Perhaps most interesting of all, though, is the line that Rey says about “something else … calling” out to her, juxtaposed with that now-infamous shot of Kylo Ren holding his hand out. Is it possible that she’s foreseeing a potential future?
Next: Can we ever forgive Kylo Ren?
