4. A Christmas Carol  at The Goodman Theatre

There’s never a shortage of incredible theater in Chicago. Right now, there’s a certain revolutionary musical in town at the CIBC Theater. And during the holidays, the programming somehow gets even better.

There’s Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and The Joffrey Ballet’s Nutcracker. But for the last four decades, there’s been one production that has reigned supreme, and it’s over at the Goodman.

The theatre started putting on A Christmas Carol in 1978 and it’s become an annual tradition for many a Chicagoan. Opening on Nov. 18 this year, the cast and crew are celebrating the 40th anniversary of putting on the show.

The show has seen several names come and go, including Chicago Fire favorite Joe Minoso. This year’s production is led by veteran Ebenezer Scrooge, Larry Yando, who’s returning this year for his 10th season with the Goodman.

A Christmas Carol will run at the theater through Dec. 31, giving residents and tourists alike a wide window to check this off the holiday bucket list. Being in the theater district, there’s plenty of food nearby, including a Corner Bakery Cafe for a pre-show date, and the streets are easy to maneuver.
