Justice League news rundown: What you need to know

Three questions still surround Justice League: Its quality, its box office score and its Rotten Tomatoes score. There are at least guesses to some of these.

Depending on how you feel about Thursday screenings, Justice League is either finally arriving tomorrow or on Friday. Regardless, it’s close, and the questions remain.

Let’s start with quality. Richard Lawson, writing for Vanity Fair, puts it like this: “Justice League is such a misguided mess—often feeling entirely unguided—that you want to intervene, softly saying, ‘Stop, stop, you don’t have to do this, stop.'” The Verge’s Tasha Robinson is more positive, but still has words like “fractured” and “odd tonal mismatches.”

Mark Hughes in Forbes includes plenty of discussion of how much money this movie could make, but then calls it a “two-hour live-action superhero cartoon made for kids as well as adults,” which appears to be praise but might turn fans away.

At least James Wan likes it?

Second, Variety now reports that what could be a budgeted $300-million movie is now aiming for $110 million domestically to start this weekend. As Variety points out, that’s lower than expected — earlier this week, yours truly mentioned the figure used to be $130 million. With reviews dropping today, it’s possible that that could have changed something, but Variety also points out that ticket sales seem to be doing well.

Finally, let’s talk score: Metacritic (with a hat tip to Screen Rant) has also started piling together reviews. Over there, things currently sit at a score of 51 — which seems to lend credence to the high-40s low-50s range being the landing spot for Justice League‘s score among the review aggregators. (Ironically enough, there are 11 positive reviews and 17 negative currently collected by Metacritic, which just so happens to be the film’s release date if you write dates in the American style. Unfortunately, the coincidence doesn’t extend to the three negative reviews.)

CBR is reporting that Flixster briefly actually had a Rotten Tomatoes score of 48% for the movie. However, as of this writing, this writer has been unable to confirm that that is the case; Flixster no longer lists a score for the film. (Making it seem slightly more credible: the 98% “want to see score,” which is also available on Rotten Tomatoes’ page.) Additionally, Rotten Tomatoes‘ own page doesn’t even aggregate any of the many reviews that have already surfaced around the Internet, lest sleuths be able to put together a provisional score.
