Taylor Swift is being accused of attempting to intimidate her critics.
According to a report by Life & Style magazine on November 15, the singer’s legal team has been working hard in recent weeks and just days before her new album, Reputation, was released on November 10, they reportedly fired off a letter to PopFront in which they threatened to sue to small blog after it shared an article claiming that some white supremacists have embraced her and her music. In response, the American Civil Liberties Union spring into action in defense of the blog, claiming that Swift was attempting to suppress free speech and bully the press.
What did the PopFront article say?
In September, writer Meghan Herning took to the PopFront blog and suggested that the lyrics to “Look What You Made Me Do” showcased a subtle support of a “racial hierarchy” and alleged that her music video included Nazi imagery.
Taylor Swift’s team fired off a legal letter to Perez Hilton
Around the same time, Perez Hilton was sent a “take-down notice” after sharing an image of Swift’s leaked track list and when he failed to comply, his Twitter account was suspended.
“The effect of her actions is to intimidate critics from expressing opinions she doesn’t like,” Christine Sun, legal director for the ACLU of Northern California, told Life & Style magazine. “It appears she’s hoping folks won’t express these views in the first place. I hope as an artist she would see why free speech is important.”
According to the Life & Style magazine report, Swift’s reputation means the world to her, which is why she is on high alert when it comes to what is being said and oversensitive to criticism.
