On Monday, November 13, Taylor Swift made an unannounced appearance on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon during his first show on air since the death of his mother.

It was an emotional performance, to say the least, and it wasn’t anything we were expecting. Before Swift came out, Jimmy Fallon told his audience a story about his mother He spoke with raw emotion as he talked highly of a memory he had of his mom always squeezing his hand three times before doing a show or doing it when he was a little kid.

By that time, the audience was in tears but Fallon held it together and announced the special performance by Swift. Then, without further ado, we saw Swift playing the closing track from her album reputation “New Years Day” on the piano. It was a moment filled with emotion as we could tell the lyrics resonated with Fallon, and Swift herself was there for him. It was evident in the way she played and the way she hugged him after.

It was a raw and emotional performance by Swift and one that will be unforgettable. This is what we love about the songstress. It’s not always about a big production. A piano and her vocals may be simple but it’s where Swift strives best and tonight proved that to be true. Not only was she a gift to Fallon tonight, she was for all those who were watching.
