Wonder Woman 2 has a new date in 2019, and it’s a good sign
Wonder Woman’s second solo outing will no longer compete for December holiday money in 2019, but it will have a shot at owning an entire month instead.
Fans will get a chance to shout their Amazonian war cries a little earlier than they thought. According to Deadline, Wonder Woman 2 will now bow on Nov. 1, 2019.
This move makes pretty much total sense. First of all, it worked the first time to separate the film from a Disney-linked property by a month, so why not let it work a second time? DC has also staked out a November release date for this year’s Justice League, which is supposed to be the big team-up movie that is currently predicted to score $130 million in its opening frame this weekend by sites like Box Office Pro.
By putting Wonder Woman 2 in a similar spot, it seems like DC is signaling confidence in the skills of Diana Prince to bring home the money — even in a completely different season than she did the first time. Could she necessarily make it up to the predicted heights of Justice League by herself? That’s a little less certain, but superhero sequels on the Marvel side of things have shown an ability to outperform their predecessors. It’s impossible to make a solid prediction two years out, but it shouldn’t be ruled out.
Now, as for that Disney-linked property … this year, it was Spider-Man: Homecoming. In 2019, things will be even tighter for tentpole franchises looking for a fall/winter debut. I mentioned in passing while discussing Marvel’s 2020 plans that Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman 2 will share a year, if not a season. That’s because Star Wars Episode IX also looms in December 2019, a point that Culturess has been talking about for months — and in fact, predicted that Warner Bros. would probably shift Wonder Woman, although Buckie Wells guessed it would go to August, not November.
