Taylor Swift just announced her blockbuster album reputation, and with it came songs that are now a part of our everyday lives.
After carefully processing the album, we finally chose which song we wanted for our song of the week. While all the tracks are phenomenal, “New Years Day” is a standout. Not only does it display a softer side of Swift, it’s also a track that showcases where she is right now in her life. It’s a happy song and one of the best tracks we believe Swift has ever written.
There’s some so delicate and calm about “New Years Day”. It’s a nod to new beginnings and putting the past behind her. No, the song isn’t country but it is classically Swift. Throughout the track, Swift describes the aftermath of a party but also speaks about the one person who stayed with her after the noise and chaos of a party or perhaps her year that was 2016. “I want your midnights,” she sings to her lover. “Don’t read the last page but I stay,” she also sings, letting them know that she’s there for the long haul and she doesn’t want the calmness or the solidly built relationship to end anytime soon.
It’s the best way to end an album, which is why it’s our Song of the Week. While the entire album displays her last three years, which were chaotic messy, she ends in a full circle moment by stripping it back down and coming back to what she does best. No, the old Taylor never really went away. She’s hidden throughout the entire album and “New Years Day” isa full refelction of the calm after the storm. It’s simple yet so breathtakingly beautiful.
