Chance the Rapper’s feature film debut gets a mysterious trailer

The one-minute trailer for Slice, a murder mystery starring Chance the Rapper, leaves us with more questions than answers.

The trailer for Chance the Rapper’s Slice makes an aggressive nod to a viral video from earlier this month, which features the Line Rider animation bouncing through its 2D world to the tune of “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” No word yet on what Line Rider has to do with the film, but we’re hoping it’s relevant somehow … or else the trailer might be toeing the line between allusion and something else.

Nonetheless, we are excited to see Chance’s feature film debut. After dabbling in dramatic acting in the seriously dark VICE short Mr. Happy, this will be the first time Chance will showcase his acting chops on the big screen.

Though Chance is not first-billed, the poster indicates he will be the star of the show. The poster artwork provides two other keys pieces of information: First, it confirms our deeply held hopes that pizza somehow plays into this murder mystery. Second, he’s listed as Chance Bennett rather than Chance the Rapper.

Perhaps this isn’t quite a bombshell, but it could suggest that Chance is taking a Childish Gambino-esque approach to carving out different identities for different forms of media. Which in turns suggests that Chance may have more acting/film projects in mind, and perhaps will continue his meteoric rise by bringing his thoughtful artistic works to new and interesting mediums.

Whether or not this proves true, we are definitely here for the Chance Media Empire, should it come to fruition.

Chance will star alongside Joe Keery (most known for playing Steve from Stranger Things) and Zazie Beats (previously seen in Atlanta). Slice is directed by Austin Vesely and produced by A24, which is a great omen for any project, given the production company’s recent successes (Moonlight, The Lobster, A Ghost Story, the list goes on).

As of now, the release date is TBD, but you can bet we are waiting with bated breath for the announcement.
