Has Adam Driver told us Rey’s identity ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi?

Another day, another possible reveal from The Last Jedi cast. This time Adam Driver is the culprit, apparently teasing Rey’s origins in a new interview.

Seemingly referring to the parallels between his character Kylo Ren and Rey in the Star Wars franchise, Driver told GQ, “You have, also, the hidden identity of this princess who’s hiding who she really is so she can survive and Kylo Ren and her hiding behind these artifices.”

We have many questions. Does Driver mean that Rey is literally a princess, or is he underestimating our ability to read into things? Has Rey perhaps inherited a title we’ve previously associated with a certain General? And does this explain the meaningful looks given to her by Han in The Force Awakens, and why he appears to be able to explain to Maz Kanata who she is?

Of course, if she is the child of Han and Leia (which, we have to admit, would make a lot of sense, given that these films have always been a Skywalker family drama), that would also mean Rey is Kylo’s sister.

That seems a little simple to us, but Daisy Ridley did say last year that she felt her character’s parentage was obvious. And it would help explain the clear bond between her and Kylo, which appears to go beyond a frightful level of what Luke calls “raw power”, as well as Rey’s Force sensitivity.

It wouldn’t explain why Kylo doesn’t seem to know her, on the other hand. He presumably would have recognized a sibling and The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams revealed in The Force Awakens commentary that Kylo and Rey have never met before the events on Starkiller Base. Kylo has heard of her though, but how and in what capacity is yet again giving us more questions than answers.

Still, Driver has given us food for thought. Other than questions of royalty, if Driver is talking about Rey, his wording also makes it sound like the scavenger is deliberately hiding her identity, as opposed to it being hidden from her as we’ve been led to believe.

But we shouldn’t get too ahead of ourselves. As Gizmodo points out, it is highly unlikely that Driver has actually dropped a spoiler for The Last Jedi — you don’t star in a franchise like Star Wars and not know how to keep secrets (although it does happen, doesn’t it, Mark Ruffalo?)

What do you think: Is Rey royalty? And is she more aware of her identity than we first thought? Is Driver even talking about Rey in the first place?
