13. Johnny Depp — Sleepy Hollow (1999)

At Halloween, there are two unspoken rules. Number one: give out the candy you don’t like, first. Number two: if Christina Ricci is in the movie, it can be considered a Halloween movie. She has a knack for picking darker roles, like in The Addams Family. She also has a bit of skill at choosing roles opposite attractive heroes. First, there was Casper (we’ll get to him in a minute). Then, in 1999, there was Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow.

Depp has his own tendency to pick odd characters, but Ichabod Crane is one of the tamer ones. With the character, Depp is able to exercise both his humor and his serious side. Ichabod Crane is a New York City police constable, investigating a series of murders, suspected to be the work of the Headless Horseman.

Realistically, it’s not much of a stretch to call Sleepy Hollow a Halloween movie. In most retellings, the Headless Horseman’s portable head is a flaming pumpkin. Over the years, it has become a classic scary story during the month of October. For those who can pull it off, the Headless Horseman is also a popular, though elaborate costume.

The movie has its fair share of creepiness, but it’s much less terrifying to face the Headless Horseman when Johnny Depp is the hero hunting him. The best part is fans get to see his whole, unaltered face in this movie. With roles like Captain Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands, Depp is often covered in makeup.
