14. Jeremy Renner — Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)

The original Hansel and Gretel might just be an old fairytale to warn children not to accept things from strangers. But Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is a gory action movie, perfect to watch around Halloween. It has trolls, blood moons, witches and, most importantly, Jeremy Renner.

In this retelling, the fabled siblings Hansel and Gretel didn’t just go on with their lives after escaping the witch whose house was made of candy. Instead, they used the experience as inspiration to become lifelong witch hunters. It’s a messy profession, but one that is ultimately helpful and lucrative.

Renner plays none other than Hansel, and he does not like witches. He’s trigger-happy and untrusting, but that doesn’t make him any less lovable. That’s largely because of his bond with his sister. He cares for her above all else, and has a great sibling rapport with Gemma Arterton, who plays Gretel. Plus, similar to his role of Hawkeye in The Avengers, Renner also gets to utilize his sarcastic side in this movie.

Directed by Tommy Wirkola, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters uses heavy CGI to make absolutely terrifying witches. Their faces crack and mutate and everything in between. Their deaths aren’t pretty either. The effects are graphic, creating scenes where heads are literally crushed and bodies viscerally explode.

For those with a weak stomach, this movie can be pretty rough. But with Jeremy Renner as a hero, it’s much easier to get through, especially for the eyes. It’ll also provide solid costume inspiration.
