Star Wars: The Last Jedi: A very brief look at something new

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has some fresh footage to put on display today, although it’s not technically a new trailer or anything like that.

Before you whip yourself into a frenzy over a surprise Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer, a word of warning. This is not an actual trailer for The Last Jedi. It does, however, have some very brief snippets of new footage, and also includes people talking about the movie.

In other words, it’s time to re-watch these two minutes a few times, just to make sure you have the full effect.

It comes via USA Today on Twitter:

Some of this looks quite familiar, particularly the scenes with Daisy Ridley’s Rey on what appears to be Skellig Michael, otherwise known as the inspiration for Ahch-To. Those scenes pop up quite prominently in the most recent actual trailer.

However, it looks an awful lot like that’s Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron in an on-the-ground action scene. We’d know that dark hair anywhere. Additionally, there’s an all-too-brief look at a Rose and Finn scene, both of them wearing costumes that have already been Funko-ized. Incidentally, we don’t have any actual dialogue from the film.

That’s all covered up by voice-over from director Rian Johnson and some of the main cast … including, as USA Today‘s own tweet mentions, Carrie Fisher, whose character also gets a shout-out in the music, which opens with the main melody of “Han Solo and the Princess” from The Empire Strikes Back.

Might it be the musical accompaniment what appears to be the scene where Kylo Ren (or, you know, the son of Solo and the princess) is involved in a battle with his mother on the other side, or is it just reused and perfectly selected to alternately hype us up and also tug at our feelings?

Next: Does Taika Waititi have a point about Star Wars?

Either way, it’s a pitch-perfect musical choice for Star Wars, although at this point, it’s practically expected. What did you notice that’s new in this two minutes?
