What are the best TV shows to watch this Halloween?
Supernatural season 4 episode 5 — “Monster Movie”
This is the only TV show on this list that isn’t a sitcom. But that doesn’t make it any less fun.
Sam and Dean Winchester are back at it fighting monsters. But this particular monster is using the plots of old horror films to do its dirty deeds.
The entire episode is filmed in black and white, adding to that old Hollywood horror feel. What’s more, it’s set at a small town Oktoberfest, making it even more of an amusing set piece. (Jensen Ackles in lederhosen is truly a sight to behold.)
Yet again, this Halloween episode proves what Supernatural is best at – emotional brotherhood, frightening monsters and a hefty dollop of banter. It provides the comic relief after an emotionally exhausting start to the season, following Dean’s return from Hell.
“Monster Movie” is a return to tongue-in-cheek form. Supernatural has never been in doubt of what it is. It’s an adventure-mystery show about two brothers who love each other. If it scares you, that’s the icing on the brotherly cake.
You could pick any episode of Supernatural on Halloween and be scarily happy. “Monster Movie” is a classic, though. And it probably taught me more about the themes of Dracula than a degree in English Literature did.
