What are the best TV shows to watch this Halloween?
Happy Endings season 2, episode 5 – “Spooky Endings”
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Happy Endings was cancelled too soon. But if ever a holiday demonstrated the show’s true virtue, it’s Halloween.
“Spooky Endings” is another corker for costumes. Max, for example, names himself the newly-single Penny’s “wingbaby”, fulfilling the baby part of her truly bizarre mother-and-baby costume.
Dave and Alex, however, are experiencing Halloween as singletons for the first time since their break up. They decide to reject all couple’s costumes and go as what they’ve always wanted.
It doesn’t quite go as planned. Alex, who turns up as Marilyn Monroe, gets mistaken for a drag queen. Dave, who dresses up as Austin Powers, simply reminds everyone of Elton John instead.
Meanwhile, my favourite couple in the show, Jane and Brad, are in the suburbs for the evening and here lies the true nightmare – terrifying older kids, armed with eggs, who just want their candy.
I’d watch Eliza Coupe read the phone book and, in Jane, she gets the romcom lead role she deserves.
Happy Endings is always a joy to watch, and let’s all just admit that we live in the Darkest Timeline when a show this great only gets three seasons.
