Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2 episode 4 — “Halloween II”

Another year, another threat of Brooklyn Nine-Nine being cancelled, which is perhaps the scariest thing of all. But that’s not why it’s on this list.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Halloween episodes have become home to a long-standing tradition in which Detective Jake Peralta tries to beat his boss and mentor Captain Holt at detective work by trying to steal one of Holt’s prized possessions.

In this second Halloween special, Jake and the team seemingly join forces with a pickpocketing criminal to steal the Captain’s watch and the show sticks to what it is good at — genuine ensemble comedy.

There is no weak link in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast and as such, there are no boring storylines. Jake’s heist might provide the action of the episode, and the ultimate pay off at the end, but Terry Crews and Chelsea Peretti are also at their strongest providing the heart.

Terry Crews is, as always, an absolute jewel as Sergeant Terry Jeffords, one of the most supportive and soft human beings, who proves that shows don’t have to rely on lazy stereotypes to get laughs.

And his dance with Peretti’s Gina at the end, while he’s dressed as a bare-chested Roman soldier, makes it more than worth investing in the full twenty minutes of Halloween skulduggery.

Again, it might not be one for horror fanatics, but if you’re hoping to howl at the moon with laughter this Halloween, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is going to deliver.
