Taylor Swift Song of the Week: State of Grace
By Kara Johnson
Have you ever heard a song that escalates into a beautiful yet tragic anthem? That’s how we feel about Taylor Swift’s “State of Grace,” which is why it’s our song of the week.
“State of Grace” was released as a promotional single on October 16, 2012. It was written by Swift and Nathan Chapman and is musically a departure from her previous album Speak Now. It’s a song that portrays immense emotion with a large chorus that you will remember forever once you’ve heard it.
Epic in the chorus and raw in the lyrics is what makes “State of Grace” what it is. It’s the best album opener in Swift’s career and yes, it should’ve been a single. But in a way, we Swifties are glad that we have this song all to ourselves.
“State of Grace” is a song about falling in love and not expecting it and thinking about the different ways it could go. Lyrically, Swift pens the emotions in effortless fashion. In a lot of ways, she’s right. Love can be a ruthless game and sometimes, it’s a worthwhile fight. It all depends on which way the relationship is going to go. “State of Grace” is relatable to its core and is the opening track to the soundtrack to Autumn. What can be better than that?
An acoustic version of the track was featured on the deluxe edition of Red and is proven to be just as emotionally raw as the original, if not, better.
